1946 The Gentleman's Companion Volume l and ll by Charles H Baker Jr, Exotic Cookery and Drinking Books set. This set includes "Volume l Being an Exotic Cookery Book" and "Volume ll Being an Exotic Drinking Book". This two-volume set comes in its original slipcase. This extremely rare set has a magical feel to it, from the rec-cloth hardcovers to the vintage recipes. Truly a neat set of mixology/cookery guides. Both books have vibrant red-cloth hardcovers and the Cookery book has a gold fork/knife/spoon hallmark on the lower right while the Drinking book has a gold martini glass/shaker hallmark on the lower right. Here's a summary of each book:

Volume I: Being an Exotic Cookery Book Including: a select company of hand-picked South American recipes gleaned from Chefs of high and low estate. Each one notable in its place, faithfully collected on a journey involving over 30,000 air-miles visiting and eating in every civilized section of that Great Continent. This cook book contains numerous unique recipes including "Grecian Soup", "Stuffed Olives" and "Madras Curry".

Volume II: Being An Exotic Drinking Book Including a personally tested regiment of lively Latin liquid masterpieces from Greater and Lesser ports and cities of South American republics . Condé Nast" contributing writer St. John Frizell wrote, "It's prose, not his recipes, that deserves a place in the canon of culinary literature . at times humorously grandiloquent, at times intimate and familiar, Baker fills his stories with colorful details about his environment and his drinking companions - Ernest Hemingway and William Faulkner among them". This book contains numerous vintage cocktail recipes including "New Orleans Fizz No 1" and "East India Cocktail" and many others.

Condition: Good vintage condition overall with obvious signs of age/wear. We're pretty Type A about the exact condition of our books, so here's a summary:

Slipcase: There's wear to the edges of the opening of the slipcase. There's also a rip along the slipcase's spine (see photo #7)

Volume 1 (Cookery): Good condition with two obvious signs of age: The first is right inside the front cover. When you open it, the inside paper has come apart from the opposite page (this does not affect the binding, which is very tight/secure. See photo #6) The second sign is the spine's red cloth has faded. The red cloth exterior front and back is in great shape and vibrant with the exception of the spine that's lighter than the rest (likely due to the book being protected in its slipcover all these years but the spine of the book being exposed ). See photo #8 for reference.

Volume 2 (Drinking): Great condition overall. The red cloth exterior is in great shape and vibrant with the exception of the spine that's lighter than the rest (likely due to the book being protected in its slipcover all these years but the spine of the book being exposed ). See photo #8 for reference. The pages are in excellent condition. Tight binding.

Measurements: each book measures 9 1/2" tall x 6 1/4" wide.

In short, this magical and rare book set is in very good vintage condition with a few signs of obvious age. Please see all photos. Cheers!
