A stunning set of 6 silver-plated stirrup cups by Italy, REM. These stirrup cups were made around the same time as the GUCCI stirrup cups (which were also made in Italy). These silver-plated cups are extremely heavy in weight and very well crafted. They have the most incredible detailing...from the bore's tusks to the hound's nose. And when turned upside down, each cup rests on it's head. These came from a private seller and have been stored away for decades. Truly a breath-taking set that has a magical feel them.
A quick summary on this type of cup and where the name originated: Stirrup cups were given to guests when they were leaving and had their feet in the leather stirrups (of the horse). It was also traditional to serve wine/port/sherry at the meet, prior to the fox hunt, so the stirrup cup was taken by a rider who was about to depart.
This set includes 6 stirrup cups: 1 Hare, 3 Hounds (Dogs), 1 Horse, 1 Fox
Hallmarks: "Italy REM" can be found on each cup
Measurements: Approx 5 1/2 to 6" tall (depending on the cup/animal) x 3" in diameter
Condition: Very good vintage condition with mild signs of age and wear including tarnish and one small, shallow ding, and tarnish to one of the stirrups interior/bottom (see photo #6).
