A lovely elephant silver-plated stirrup cup, circa 1970s. This cup features the most incredible detailing...from the elephant's ears to his trunk. And when turned upside down, it rests perfectly on its head. Truly a neat figural stirrup cup.
A quick summary on this type of cup and where the name originated: Stirrup cups were given to guests when they were leaving and had their feet in the leather stirrups (of the horse). It was also traditional to serve wine/port/sherry at the meet, prior to the fox hunt, so the stirrup cup was taken by a rider who was about to depart.
Hallmarks/era: "Italy" and "M / M" can be found on the lower back part of the upper section of the cup / 1970s Measurements: Approx 6" tall x 3" in diameter Condition: Good vintage condition with mild signs of age/surface wear. The silver-plating is vibrant overall with minor surface wear. The left exterior of the cup has a mild roughness to the tough (you can't so much see it but can feel it, we assume it was a manufacturing occurrence when the cup was made and the silver-plating was applied). No dents or dings. There's some very minor tarnish to the interior bottom of the cup. Please note: the head of this stirrup cup has a tiny "hole" slightly larger than a pin head just below the elephant's trunk as well as behind one ear (we assume for aeration purposes, it was manufactured that way). Overall, this cup is in good vintage condition with mild signs of age/wear and displays beautifully. We're selling other stirrup cups by this same vintage manufacturer. See other listings. Cheers!
