A lovely vintage silver-plated Fox stirrup cup. This stirrup features a figural Fox head that has the most incredible detailing, from its ears to its fur. And it rests perfectly on its heads/ears when turned upside down. Extremely heavy in weight (heavier than many of our vintage stirrup cups), this cup is solid and well-crafted. Truly a neat piece.
A quick summary on this type of cup and where the name originated: Stirrup cups (dating back to the late 18th century and 19th century) were given to guests when they were leaving and had their feet in the leather stirrups (of the horse). It was also traditional to serve wine/port/sherry at the meet, prior to the fox hunt, so the stirrup cup was taken by a rider who was about to depart.
Hallmarks/era: None; Mid Century
Condition: Good vintage condition with noticeable signs of age/wear. The silver-plating is in good condition overall but does show general signs of wear. There's some mild plating loss to the Fox's head (the tips of his ears and nose, see photos 6 and 7). The interior is clean overall but does have a few small tarnish spots to the very bottom. No dents or dings. The rim is perfectly round. It displays beautifully. In short, this vintage stirrup cup is in good vintage condition with signs of age/wear inline with a piece that's 70+ years old.
Measurements: 5 1/4" tall x a tad over 3 1/4" in diameter
