A lovely set of 6 Mid Century Georges Briard Hot Air Balloon glasses. Braird made a few variations of glassware with Hot Air ballooons (in clear glass and well as opaque/frosted). This pattern features clear glass with gold speckled and a Hot Air Ballooon that has a banner below it that reads "The Higher You Go The Harder You Fall". They have a magical feel to them. Briard did some pretty whimsical glassware patterns and this one is no exception.
A quick summary about this glassware maker: Georges Briard was the go-to for decorative housewares in the 1950s and 60s and was carried at upscale retails like Bloomingdale’s and Neiman Marcus. Briard’s success and notoriety came with the use of 22-karat gold as screened decoration for bent glassware. His design hallmarks are repetitive patterns, most often featuring geometric shapes or nature based images. Georges Briard is known for creating some of the most stunning Mid Century Modern glassware as well as Atomic and Kitsch designs in the later 1970s and is the essence of MCM glassware excellence.
Maker/era; Georges Briard / Mid Century
Hallmarks: All glasses are signed "Georges Briard" black font (the signature on this pattern is smaller than some of his other patterns and can be found just above the right side of the banner -- see photo #2
Measurements: 5 1/2" tall x 2 3/4" in diameter
Condition: Good vintage condition but with noticeable signs of age. The glass itself is in excellent shape, perfectly clear (no cloudiness) and no chips or nicks. The pattern shows wear (some glasses more than others). Here's a full summary:
1) Most of the Turquoise blue has faded OR is gone (see photo #2, #4 as an example and also photo #6, so you can see each glass)
2) Some of the black enamel is not as deep and/or has faded in some areas
In short, these glasses are in good vintage condition but do show enamel loss. Please see all photos. The glass itself is in great shape. And the gold speckles on all glasses is also in great condition and vibrant. Truly a magical set.
