A neat set of 4 Georges Briard "Name Your Poison" rocks glasses and skull swizzle sticks. This hard to come by pattern is the pinnacle of Georges Briard patterns and truly a magical one. Each glass has a poison graphic (i.e. Paris Green, Iodine, Wood Alcohol, etc) and "Name Your Poison" can be found at the bottom of each glass graphic along with "RX" on the sides of the glasses, criss-crossed knives and a mortal/pestle. The graphics colors are a stunning deep black with a vibrant gold. The skull swizzle sticks (which are made of a hard resin/plastic) have faux jeweled eyes and are an Ivory color. Truly a magical set.
This set includes: 4 rocks glasses and 4 skull swizzle sticks.
A quick summary about this glassware maker: Georges Briard was the go-to for decorative housewares in the 1950s and 60s and was carried at upscale retails like Bloomingdale’s and Neiman Marcus. Briard’s success and notoriety came with the use of 22-karat gold as screened decoration for bent glassware. His design hallmarks are repetitive patterns, most often featuring geometric shapes or nature based images. Georges Briard is known for creating some of the most stunning Mid Century Modern glassware as well as Atomic and Kitsch designs in the later 1970s and is the essence of MCM glassware excellence.
Maker/era: Georges Briard, Mid Century
Hallmarks: Only one glass bares the signature (in small gold font "Georges Briard" can be found on the Wood Alcohol glass) - the other three do not have a signature
Measurements: A tad over 4" tall by 4" in diameter; the skull swizzle sticks measure 6 3/4" in length
Overall condition: Good vintage condition overall with signs of age. We like to be thorough, so here's a full summary:
Wood Alcohol - Good condition overall. Minor wear to the gold on the right "Rx"; there's some minor age to the clear glass on the upper portion (where it seems slightly speckled).
Paris Green - Good condition overall. There's some very minor age to the black graphics in a few places. The gold Rx's on each side are crisp and in good shape. There's also a tiny scrape to the glass (just above the "Y" in "Your").
Potassium Cyanide - Very good condition overall. Very good condition overall. There's some very minor age to the black graphics in a few places. The gold Rx's on each side are crisp and in good shape.
Carbolic Acid - Good condition overall. There's minor gold loss on each of the Rx's on both sides.
Skull swizzle sticks: All jewels in the eyes are present. Please note: you can see some the the "glue" that was used to apply the jewels to the eyes and a few areas have yellowed slightly (purely due to age/time). General surface wear. Overall, these sticks are in good shape.
Please note: you can also see very subtle "waves" to some of the glass (purely the nature of Mid Century glassware and how these were manufactured).
In short, these collectible glasses are in good vintage condition with mild signs of age and minor wear listed above. Cheers!
***General vintage glassware disclaimer: Please note, Mid Century glassware often had manufacturing occurrences such as waves in the glass, a tiny bubble in the glass, an extra dot of gold paint that made it on the black enamel, etc. Purely the nature of Mid Century glassware. Cheers!
