A lovely set of 6 Purple Thistle glasses by Gregory Duncan. The pattern is simply stunning and features an embossed pattern of deep purple and vibrant gold thistles. The texture of these is simply gorgeous and has a slightly "raised" or 3-D feel to it. Truly a stunning and rare set.
Maker/era: Gregory Duncan, Mid Century
A quick summary on this glassware manufacturer: There is little information on this glassware maker. It appears they were American based and made/sold glassware during the Mid Century. Similar to Culver, their patterns were highly textured/raised and featured real 22k gold in the design. Their most notable patterns include Dandelions and Thistles. This glassware always bared the signature "Gregory Duncan". We are unable to find any data as to when they stopped producing glassware.
Hallmarks: All glasses are signed "Gregory Duncan" in 22k gold, although some signatures are faded. Here's a signature summary: 3 glasses have perfect signatures, 2 glasses have very faint fading to their signatures, 1 glass has more wear to the signature than the others and is pretty faint but can be seen.
Condition: Very good vintage condition but with minor wear and one (1) manufacturing flaw. The gold/pattern is extremely vibrant. The glass clarity is perfectly clear, zero cloudiness. Here's a full summary:
1) A few of the signatures are slightly faded
2) There's a noticeable manufacturing flaw to one of the glasses on the rim. We see this often but want to emphasize it here as it's noticable. The top rim dips slightly and is shorter than it should be. See photo#8 -- you can compare the glass with the flaw (on the left side, where our finger is pointing) to another glass. Photo #9 is a photo of the glass looking straight down at it.
In short, these glasses are in good conditon and extremely vibrant in color with one noticeable manufacturing flaw. Cheers.
