A lovely pair of silver-plated "hound" or dog stirrup cups. These cups are hallmarked REM Italy (and very similar to the vintage GUCCI stirrup cups in their style and shape). These cups have a magical feel to them, are extremely heavy in weight and are extremely well crafted. They feature the most incredible detailing...from the dog's noses to their "fur". And when turned upside down, these cups rest on the their heads.
A quick summary on this type of cup and where the name originated: Stirrup cups were given to guests when they were leaving and had their feet in the leather stirrups (of the horse). It was also traditional to serve wine/port/sherry at the meet, prior to the fox hunt, so the stirrup cup was taken by a rider who was about to depart.
Hallmarks: "REM" and "Italy" can be found on the lower part of the stirrup's upper section
Measurements: Approx 5 1/2" tall x 3 1'4" in diameter
Condition: Good vintage condition with signs of age/wear. We're listing these cups as "good" due to one side of each cup having silver-plating wear. When the cups are facing to the right, you can see the silver-plating wear we're referring to. Likely due to how they were stored, those sides of the cup formed wear that will not polish away. Please see photos #3, #6, and #10. When the cups are facing the opposite direction, the silver-plating is in very good condition. It's just on the one side of each cup (again, likely due to how they were stored for decades). The interior of the cups also show some signs of age/wear to the silver-plating, see photo #7. In short, these cups are in "good" condition as each cup has noticeable wear on one side that will not polish away as well as "age" in a few places. They still display beautifully.
