A lovely pair of vintage silver-plated Fox stirrup cups by PM Italy, circa 1970s. These cups feature figural Fox heads that have the most incredible detailing, from the ears to the fur. They rest perfectly on their heads/ears when turned upside down. Extremely heavy in weight (heavier than many of our vintage stirrup cups), these cups are solid and well-crafted. Truly a lovely pair.
A quick summary on this type of cup and where the name originated: Stirrup cups (dating back to the late 18th century and 19th century) were given to guests when they were leaving and had their feet in the leather stirrups (of the horse). It was also traditional to serve wine/port/sherry at the meet, prior to the fox hunt, so the stirrup cup was taken by a rider who was about to depart.
Hallmarks/era: "PM Italy" can be found on the top of each fox's head (you'll need a high-powered lens to see it) along with "Silverplated" and "Brass" (meaning silver-plated over brass). One hallmark is tougher to see as it wasn't stamped quite as heavily into the metal.
Condition: Good vintage condition with mild signs of age. We like to be thorough, so here's a full summary:
1) These cups have some tarnish, mostly to the Fox heads (please note: we have not polished them)
2) The silver-plating is in great shape overall, however one cup has a small area where the silver-plating looks slightly "rippled" (not uncommon with vintage silver-plated pieces and occurs during the manufacturing process).
3) Please note: the head of this stirrup cup was made in a "mold" and a subtle "seam" can be seen on the front of the fox's neck (completely common with vintage stirrup cups).
No dents or dings of any kind. Truly a stunning pair; they display beautifully.
Measurements: 5 1/4" tall x a tad over 3 1/4" in diameter
