A lovely set of four (4) vintage silver-plated stirrup cups, early Mid Century. These cups include a Hare (rabbit), a Stag (deer), a Hound (dog), and a Horse. Extremely heavy in weight, these stirrup cups are slightly heavier than some vintage stirrup cups we've seen. Their detailing is simply incredible, from their ears to their "fur". And these cups rest perfectly on their heads/ears when turned upside down. Truly a stunning, well-crafted set.
A quick summary on this type of cup and where the name originated: Stirrup cups (dating back to the late 18th century and 19th century) were given to guests when they were leaving and had their feet in the leather stirrups (of the horse). It was also traditional to serve wine/port/sherry at the meet, prior to the fox hunt, so the stirrup cup was taken by a rider who was about to depart.
Hallmarks/era: None; Mid Century
Condition: Very, very good vintage condition. The silver-plating is extremely vibrant. There is some very mild/general age (there's some mild tarnish/age to one small area on the underside of the stag's left horn). The interiors are all in near pristine condition. Overall, this set is in very good vintage condition and displays beautifully.
Measurements: Approx. 5 1/4" tall x a tad over 3 1/4" in diameter
We have a number of other silver-plated and pewter stirrups (in both cup size and jigger size)...see other listings under our Stirrup section and Jiggers section. Cheers!
